The Learning2 Europe Experience
Want to know a little more about what happens at Learning2? Take a look at what some of our attendees experienced... and then keep an eye out for registrations to our next events!
Sarah Hodgson and Gitane Reveilleau from the American International School of Bucharest shared the following newsletter with their school community after attending Learning2 Europe 2025. We thought it was so great, it needed to be shared more widely!
An important part of attending conferences is sharing the learning with colleagues upon our return! This week's edition of ‘Tech Bytes’ brings highlights of the recent Learning2 conference in Basel.
Learning2 (L2) is a non-profit organization created by teachers, for teachers and run by a dedicated team of volunteers.
It began in Asia in 2007 and, for almost a decade, has also run annual events in Europe. Each year, L2 brings educators together from around the world to share ideas, collaborate, and spark fresh inspiration. ✨
🚀 For reference, take a look at all the international schools that have previously hosted and/or supported Learning2.
Here at AISB, we’re proud to have some of our own community deeply involved:
G is a volunteer managing community engagement and marketing. This is her seventh time participating in L2 whether as a participant, presenter, or volunteer.
Sarah has attended five L2 events as a participant and workshop presenter (including 'Be More Dog' in 2019). This year she ran a PreConference session on coaching and mentoring for coaches and middle leaders.
We’re excited to keep learning and growing through conferences like L2, where educators drive the agenda and share their expertise. If you’d like more information or are curious about upcoming L2 conferences, feel free to reach out to Gitane or Sarah!
Below, you’ll find some highlights from this year’s conference.
Growing Stronger Together - Coaching and Mentoring in Action
Sarah H led this 4-hour PreConference Session. It was well attended and she received some very positive feedback.
Empowering Educators: AI, Digital Citizenship, and Future-Ready Skills
At L2, we all help one another. 🤝 That's why, when an L2 Leader couldn't make it due to a family emergency, Kim House, Stephen Reiach, and G jumped in to offer a session on a topic they know well. This hands-on workshop moved participants beyond the simple “use or don’t use” AI debate by exploring UNESCO’s AI Competency Framework, AI Assessment Scale, and critical decision points in AI systems, ensuring human oversight and student agency remain front and center.
Wellbeing to Welldoing
Sarah H attended this 3-hour Extended Session, run by Abena Baiden. An insightful workshop, where we learnt about eustress, cognitive distortions, and the CIA model of control. Abena shared this video about How to Defeat Negative Thinking and taught us how to turn ANTs (Automatic Negative Thoughts) into PETs (Performance Enhacing Thoughts). Abena also provided time for us to reflect on our own wellbeing, and supported us as we each developed a welldoing action plan for ourselves.
Cultivating a Culture of Open Doors
Sarah H attended this 3-hour workshop, run by Jancey Clark. Jancey's Extended Session focused on creating a culture of learning in which students and teachers feel autonomous, masterful, and purposeful. Jancey provided us with ideas in how to create an ideal professional learning culture, where learning is:
purposeful
personalized
collaborative
inquiry-based and
sustainable.
Artful Thinking: Creative Pathways for Teaching Global Issues
Sarah H attended this 1-hour workshop, run by Melanie Manuel. An immersive, hands-on session, Melanie guided us through Project Zero's Artful Thinking approach. She shared how she uses arts-based methods and aesthetic experiences to cultivate deeper learning around complex global issues. Melanie expertly weaved visual art, poetry, music, and textiles into a unit about migration. Participants created a graphic design of their own migration stories - here is Sarah's, printed with water-based ink!
Getting Started with Tinkercad in the Classroom
Sarah H attended this 1-hour workshop, run by Sarah Woods. Another great hands-on session, we learnt how to set up Tinkercad as a teacher and connect students. We also had fun learning the design process by creating our own 3D model. Sarah has already put her learning straight into action - printing of some Grade 5 students' PYPX 3D creations for the Exhibition next week has already begun!
Crafting Impactful Reels for Education
G ran a 1-hour session for participants on creating compelling educational reels that showcase their teaching innovations and connect with a global audience. She presented practical strategies for creating short-form video content that resonates with the education community while building one's professional presence. 💡Click here for a brief tutorial on this topic!
Student-Led Workshops
There was a great variety of workshops led by ISB students. Sarah attended two 35-minute workshops:
Developing AI Skills and Applying Them in the Classroom to Encourage Critical Thinking - a fascinating presentation by Grade 11 students, showing the multiple, ethical ways they use AI as a teaching assistant as they prepare for assignments and exams.
Understanding Cognitive-Load Theory to Help Support Students in Their Learning and Memory - the students talked about the benefits of pre-study and spaced interleaved retrieval practice and how they use this in their DP studies.
It was so refreshing to hear students' perspectives - we can learn so much from them!
Huge thanks to Gitane and Sarah for sharing their newsletter with us and the wider Learning2 community. Want to know more? Check us out online at learning2.org
